Sofa, so good. 2014 Games to re-use Olympic furniture

THREE-HUNDRED thousand items of furniture used by the world’s top athletes during the Olympics are on their way to Glasgow.

And after the 2014 Commonwealth Games, there will be a chance to snap up the bed used by Usain Bolt or the couch where Tom Daley relaxed.

Glasgow 2014 has purchased much of the furniture used in the athletes’ accommodation in London this summer.

It will be used to furnish properties in the Commonwealth Games Athletes’ Village.

An incredible 350 containers, each 40ft in length, will move the mountain of Olympic furniture to Glasgow.

Included in the consignment will be beds, mattresses, sofas, lamps, wardrobes, bath mats made from re-cycled material, lockers and umbrellas.

UK firm RGS, will be responsible for shipping and project managing the warehousing, assembly, delivery, installation, maintenance, retrieval and disposal of all 300,000 pieces.

It will also source any additional items which will be needed to ensure athletes and their support teams have everything they need.

When the sporting extravaganza is over, much of the furniture will be sold off to individuals or companies.

A similar sale in London after the Olympics offered 1000 athletes’ bedroom sets, comprising a bed, mattress, lockable bedside table and a lamp, for £99, as well as brightly coloured bean bags for £15.

The most expensive items were furniture from the ticket reception centre, which sold for £2500, while the cheapest were 50p coat hangers, which were sold in batches of 10.

There were also 14,872 LED bedside lamps, 6326 cushions, 7496 clothes drying racks and 17,978 folding chairs.

Glasgow 2014 chief executive David Grevemberg said: “RGS will be providing Glasgow 2014 with 300,000 items, the vast majority of which were used at London 2012 and are currently being put into 350 shipping containers bound for Scotland.

“This is a tangible legacy from Glasgow 2014’s positive collaboration with London 2012 and we are delighted to welcome RGS to our Sponsor Family as official Games furniture provider.

“The group’s proven track record of supplying furniture to previous Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games in the past will put us in a great position to stage a fantastic athlete centred, sport focused Games in Glasgow in 2014.”
