Glasgow 2014 to recycle bed used by Usain Bolt during Olympics as part of new sponsorship deal
RGS (UK) Ltd have been appointed as the the Official Furniture Provider of Glasgow 2014 and will transport more than 300,000 items used during the Olympics in London, including the bed slept in by Usain Bolt, to Scotland to be reused during the Commonwealth Games.
The item is set to be among the haul of lamps, wardrobes and lockers that will be transported from London to Glasgow in a convoy of 350 containers measuring 40ft each to transport.
Equipiment used in the hospitality areas and broadcast centres are also likely to be recycled by Glasgow 2014 as part of the deal.
London 2012 was the latest high-profile event that the company, part of a privately owned global furniture Group, has been involved in.
During London 2012, as well as furnishing nearly 18,000 bedroom spaces in the Olympic Village, they supplied stock ranging from the high spectator services chairs around the Olympic Park, over 80,000 folding chairs, the diving umpire chairs as well as the A&E trolleys used at every venue.
They have also previously supplied furniture, fittings and equipment for the Olympics and Paralympics at Sydney in 2000 and Athens 2004 and the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.
RGS will be responsible for designing, prototyping, managing quality control, procuring, shipping, and project managing the warehousing, assembly, delivery, installation, maintenance, retrieval and disposal – a complete end-to-end solution for Glasgow 2014, Scottish officials claim.
RGS has also been recognised for its work in providing sustainable outcomes in the design and development of both products and packaging having received the London 2012 Sustainability Ambassadors Award earlier this year.
“RGS will be providing Glasgow 2014 with 300,000 items, the vast majority of which were used at London 2012, and are currently being put into 350 shipping containers bound for Scotland,” said David Grevemberg, chief executive of Glasgow 2014.
“This is a tangible legacy from Glasgow 2014’s positive collaboration with London 2012 and we are delighted to welcome RGS to our Sponsor Family as Official Games Furniture Provider.
“The Group’s proven track record of supplying furniture to Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games in the past will put us in a great position to stage a fantastic athlete centred, sport focused Games in Glasgow in 2014.
“Sustainability is very high on our agenda and we are looking forward to working with a company who has previously been recognised for their work on producing sustainable outcomes from major sporting events.”
Paul Ramler, the chief executive of RGS, is delighted to be involved in another major event so soon after London 2012 after joining Glasgow’s family of sponsors, which already include Longines, SSE, Harper Macleod, Search Consultancy, Ernst & Young, Atos, Dell and Toshiba.
“Following on from our work with London 2012, we are delighted to be named as Official Games Furniture Provider for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games,” he said.
“This prestigious event will once again provide us with the opportunity to demonstrate our abilities to successfully manage large, multi-sport events to a world-class standard with sustainable outcomes.”
